History
KCAT was established in 1983 as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit agency to serve the communities of Los Gatos and Monte Sereno. At that time, trustees of the Los Gatos-Saratoga High School District had the foresight to see that as vocational opportunities evolved in the Santa Clara Valley from agriculture to technology, it would be advantageous to provide a training facility for students to prepare for careers in the fast-growing world of electronic communications. Thus, through a unique partnership with Los Gatos High School, and with funding from the Town Of Los Gatos, the station was created inside of a building that had previously served as the school's Agriculture Building. As a result of this partnership, KCAT and Los Gatos High School have launched the careers of many former students who now work in video, film, and related industries. Other students have used the skills learned at KCAT to launch careers in other forms of electronic media and technology.
